Rocket Scientist visits Intel Shannon

This week Intel Shannon had the exciting opportunity to host Amber Gell, a spacecraft systems engineer and aspiring astronaut. Amber who works on NASA’s exploration-class spacecraft mission, was visiting Ireland this week and took time out of her hectic schedule to talk with Intel Shannon employees and invited secondary school students and their teachers from schools in the region.

Passionate about education and an advocate for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) careers for young females, Amber enthralled her audience; “Study what you are passionate about” was a clear message for the students in the audience and she encouraged teachers to make subjects as fun as possible for their students.

“We are excited to have Amber join us here in Shannon” said Brian Aherne, Intel Shannon General Manager, commenting on the event, “encouraging young people to pursue careers in Science and Technology is something we are passionate about and what better role model to do that. Her knowledge & enthusiasm created such a buzz in the room” he continued.

Amber shared some of her background and highlighted that despite her early difficulties with Maths and Science subjects, she worked hard to become accomplished in science and has gone on to conduct research into extreme habitats to better understand how humans can function in space as well as researching how factors such as crew dynamics, physiological well-being and cultural dynamics also impact on an individual’s ability to function in a space environment

After the talk, engineers and students had the opportunity to speak to Amber and ask questions about her work, her education and her ambitions to travel to space.

Amber is in Shannon region as the Intel sponsored speaker at this year’s Irish Science Teachers’ Association Conference which is taking place in Limerick this week.
