Drogheda student scoops top Intel prize at Sentinus Young Innovators

Sentinus Young Innovators is the principal science and innovation fair in Northern Ireland and is one of the largest events of its kind in the UK. It provides a showcase for students to demonstrate a wealth of creativity and innovation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

The fair attracts students from both North and South of Ireland and Intel Ireland has been a supporter of the event for a number of years, sponsoring the premier award at the Fair – ‘The Sentinus Young Innovator’. Intel also provides a teacher award to accompany the student award.

Niamh Ann Kelly, a student at Our Lady’s College in Greenhills, Drogheda, was awarded the title of ‘Sentinus Young Innovator 2017’ for her project ‘The Antimicrobial Potential of Tree Bark Extracts’.

As part of her project Niamh Ann took bark extracts from 5 tree species which were tested for antimicrobial potential against common pathogen and bacteria causing bleeding canker on chestnut trees. The Kirby-Bauer Disk Diffusion method was used to conduct the research.

For her award Niamh Ann will receive an all-expenses paid trip to attend and exhibit at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2018 in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Her teacher, Ms Frances O’Regan, also received the Intel Educator of Excellence award and also receives an all-expenses paid trip to attend at Intel ISEF 2018.

This year more than 120 schools from the primary, secondary and special education sectors competed in the Sentinus Young Innovators event which took place in the Odyssey Arena Belfast and was attended by more than 4,000 young people.
