Engineers Week, Feb 18-24, was a week long program of nationwide events to; celebrate how engineers make a difference in our world, increase public dialogue about the need for engineers and bring engineering to life for kids, educators and parents. The heavy snow disrupted much of the scheduled activity, but, Intel engineers are not easily deterred and so this week we are still reaching out to primary schools with the Build a bridge challenge.
The Intel Engineering Challenge
This years’ theme for Engineers Week is “Inspiring Wonder,” and engineers at Intel Ireland took the opportunity to encourage the next generation, with the ‘Intel Engineering Challenge,’ an enjoyable and informative challenge wherein the budding engineers are encouraged to be as creative and innovative as possible in designing and building a bridge made from recycled materials.
While in attendance at the schools, Intel Engineers not only mentored the students in their bridge building and design, but also spoke to students about the types of work engineers do, provided an insight into what Intel does, and shared with the children their own specific role and what it entails.
Speaking about Intel’s participation in Engineers Week 2018, Head of Research Programs at Intel Ireland, Bernie Capraro said, “Intel has over 40,000 engineers across the globe who do the impossible every day, so engineering is at the heart of everything we do. We are passionate about ensuring that young people are made aware that engineering provides, not only way to look at the world around us, but a way to shape the world around us. We hope we have challenged the perception of what a typical engineer looks like and have demonstrated that engineering is not just important, but also really good fun”
Engineers Irelands’ STEPS team coordinate Engineers Week and are responsible for the national promotion and the development of resource and promotional materials and partner liaison and communication.
