22nd January 2009 – Andrei Triffo from Christian Brothers, Synge Street, Dublin was the winner of the Intel Student Award at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition for his project entitled ‘Infinite Sums of Zeta Functions and Other Dirichlet Series’. The Intel Student Award in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics goes to the best individual or group in that category and the prize is an all expenses trip to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair which is being held in Reno, Nevada in May this year. Andrei and his teacher Jim Cooke will fly off to Reno in May to represent Ireland at this event.

Kieran O’Dwyer from St. Ailbe’s Vocational School, Co. Tipperary, won the Intel Educator of Excellence award at this year’s exhibition. Kieran will also be given the opportunity to attend the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Reno this year. Intel was delighted to be able to do something to recognise the unsung heroes of the exhibition – the teachers, who do so much work behind the scenes to support and encourage their students.

Leonard Hobbs, Intel Engineering Research Manager, presented the winners with their prizes, “Intel is delighted to be associated with this event which showcases and promotes science across the country. I am honoured to present the Intel Student Award because the Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics subjects are essential for the scientists and engineers who will be tomorrow’s leaders in the high-tech industry. ”
