A group of Intel Ireland employees this week played their part in National Tree Week by planting more than 1,000 sapling trees at St. Catherine’s Park in Leixlip. The young trees, which were donated by Kildare County Council, are just some of the 15,000 trees which have been distributed for planting nationwide through local county councils as part of the 2011 National Tree Week.

National Tree Week is an annual, week-long festival celebrating all positive aspects of trees in our lives and environment.  The theme of this year’s festival is ‘The Year of the Forest – Celebrating Forests for People, in keeping with the United Nations designation of 2011 as ‘The International Year of Forests’.  During National Tree Week, people across Ireland have been encouraged to celebrate trees and forests as an integral part of their lives and their communities. and to raise awareness of the role of sustainably managed forests for the benefit of current and future generations.

Hundreds of events have been happening across Ireland during the week and on Tuesday March 8th the group of Intel employees, armed with shovels and trowels, took to the open space of St. Catherine’s park to begin the task at hand. More than 1,000 trees later the transforming landscape was beginning to take shape with the sea of new sapling trees rooted and the job in hand complete.

Intel Ireland External Relations Manager Lisa Harlow took part in the event and said, “Intel has participated in and supported National Tree Week for a number of years and we are delighted to have made such a significant contribution this year – we hope that the as the trees begin to grow that they will have a significant and long lasting effect on their surrounding area”.
