Intel Ireland has partnered with BizWorld Ireland to pilot an exciting new entrepreneurship program for 5th and 6th class primary school students. The program entitled ‘Sowing the seeds of Entrepreneurship and Money Management’ aims to educate children in the art of entrepreneurship, critical thinking, innovation, teamwork skills, leadership and the management of money.
BizWorld Ireland is a non-profit organisation which was set up in 2010 to provide unique and meaningful life-skills programs for primary school children. BizWorld Ireland, consists of a group of educators and business people who aim to empower and inspire primary school children of all ages by creating an environment in which they learn life skills such as; enterprise, critical thinking and money management.
The ‘Sowing the seeds of Entrepreneurship and Money Management’ program involves a workshop that is delivered over 2 full days in the classroom by BizWorld Tutors all of who are either qualified teachers themselves or training to be such. Over the course of the workshop the children form enterprises, apply for jobs, pitch for seed capital and are brought through The Entrepreneurial Cycle where they design, produce, market and sell a product in a real to life simulation exercise. Parents are invited to observe the activities and a local business person plays out the role of the venture capitalist. At the end of the academic year all participating BizWorld Schools will be invited to submit their best team for qualification for regional final event to find the ‘Social Entrepreneurs of the Year’.
Through their workshops and end of the year competition, BizWorld’s programs allow students across the cultural and economic spectrum to not only understand how business works but also enables them to experience it first-hand whilst focusing on important issues within their own community thus giving them a real understanding of the social aspects of entrepreneurship.
The program launched this week at Scoil Mhuire in Leixlip and will take place at a number of other schools in Kildare and Dublin including Scoil Bhride, Scoil Mhuire and Scoil Eoin Phoil in Leixlip, Gaelscoil Ui Fhiaich in Maynooth, Scoil Noamh Brid in Celbridge and St. Finbarrs BNS in Cabra. Throughout the program Intel employees will provide support to the participating schools as they volunteer in conjunction with BizWorld.
Speaking at the launch Fiona McKeon CEO of BizWorld said “We sow the seeds so they can grow their future, this competition brings these children’s creative and critical skills to a new level by encouraging them to learn about giving something back to their community. They learn about social responsibility, empowering themselves in order to effect change for the good of all in their community. Their initial skills through Bizworld provide them with the expertise to turn this vision into reality”.
Lisa Harlow, External Relations Manager at Intel Ireland also attended the launch and added “the benefits of this program extend far beyond the classroom as the children learn 21st century skills which they can carry through to secondary school and University with them; they also get to use new and existing skills in an interesting way”.
Noreen O’Sullivan, who is the Principal of Scoil Mhuire, Leixlip, shared her thoughts on BizWorld a the program launch “We have enjoyed a long standing relationship with Intel and this is a great opportunity for the pupils to experience a program that integrates with the curriculum, equips them with lifelong skills and at the same time forges positive links with their community”.
